2024 Scholarship Winner: Maryam Asghari

In the vibrant city of Kabul, Afghanistan, a young and ambitious soul named Maryam Asghari faced unexpected challenges when the USA evacuated Afghanistan in August 2021, causing a significant upheaval in her life.

Before the evacuation, Maryam achieved a remarkable feat, completing her high school education in January 2020 and securing a spot in the top 10% of her graduating class. Fueled by a passion for justice and a dream of making a difference, Maryam set her sights on law school, eagerly preparing for college admission when unforeseen events unfolded.

However, her dreams faced a daunting challenge as the Taliban took control of the Afghan government. The once-promising path to higher education seemed uncertain and perilous. The turmoil in her homeland shattered the dreams she had nurtured since high school graduation.

Undeterred by the challenges, Maryam embarked on a journey of resilience and hope. With determination in her heart, she managed to evacuate Afghanistan, navigating through various obstacles. Miraculously, with the assistance of the 30 Bird Foundation, Maryam found refuge first in Pakistan and eventually in the welcoming embrace of Canada.

Now in Canada, Maryam courageously adapted and persevered. Undeterred by challenges, she took additional classes to earn a Canadian high school diploma. Simultaneously, Maryam embraced her new life by immersing herself in the Canadian workforce.

Balancing educational pursuits with dedication, Maryam became a sales assistant in a department clothing store and worked tirelessly as a server at a local hotel. Her unwavering commitment to both studies and employment showcased her resilience and determination.

As Maryam diligently worked towards her Canadian high school diploma, she maintained a vision for the future. With dreams of higher education still burning bright, she aspires to commence her college journey at the esteemed University of Saskatchewan in the fall of 2024.

Maryam's story is a testament to the strength within individuals facing adversity. Her unwavering determination, coupled with the support of the Canadian community, paints a hopeful picture of a young woman ready to overcome challenges and seize opportunities. The tale of Maryam Asghari is one of resilience, ambition, and the pursuit of a brighter future, made possible through the transformative impact of scholarships and community support.
